Was served some Apothic at a gathering, I had no idea what it was, and could barely finish the glass. Way to sweet for my taste, but I overheard more than one comment about how "nice" this wine taste. Maybe polite guest?

Brian, you are right -- one of the keys to these wines, which I'll talk about on Monday, is that they are "smooth." Adding sugar makes the tannins less harsh, and that's something a lot of wine drinkers appreciate,

If you would like to try the best italian sweet red wine you may try "Recioto della valpolicella" and "Sagrantino passito", not cheap, but excellent with chocolate and for meditation. If you want sparkling and acidity (not for chocolate then) try "bracchetto d'acqui".

On paper, Bracchetto does not work with chocolate, but it works well for me. I think it makes a rather darn good dessert sparkling wine, but with berries, more direct, chocolate with raspberry sauce.

My unfortified, late harvested Black Muscat was one of my most popular wines since its inception in 1992, in markets as diverse as fine restaurants and kosher food stores. Frankly, I don't understand the sudden shock, and wonder why others didn't see this coming. I did, obviously. The millenials may be going for the cheap stuff, but the growth will be all over the map, in every price range.
