The funny thing was he priced the wine so low as an attempt to screw his wife in estate evaluations during a nasty divorce. Or at least that's the inside scoop. . . .

urban legend . the divorce was finished and the winery was kaput years before Franzia had the name

Thanks for the article...I had a bottle of Two Buck Chuck in my video while camping on the N. Umpqua river. :) With your permission, I'm sharing your article on FB and twitter.
Cheers!
Gail

Just FYI on a small point, Barefoot was not an imitator. The current brand dates back to 1986, when it was started by Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey, and by 2002, when Two-Buck Chuck showed up in TJ's, BF sold more than 300,000 cases. They sold to Gallo in 2005.

Rick is correct -- Barefoot was a going concern before Gallo bought it, but my point is that the multi-million case success of Barefoot under Gallo has a lot to do with the way Two-buck Chuck changed the consumer perception of cheap wine.

Of course, Gail. The more the merrier, which is what we try to encourage on the blog.

I've been buying Two-buck Chuck (all except the whites) for years now all across the country and have never encountered the inconsistent quality you mention. I do agree, however, that they're not a wine to let sit around. Pop, sip, and toss. I've found they hit their sweet spot on day 2. :)

Cheers!
