Reviews of wines that don't need their own post, but are worth noting for one reason or another. Look for it on the final Friday of each month.
• Ruffino Orvieto Classico 2009 ($10, purchased): This is what you drink when you're stuck at a chain Italian restaurant with a wine list that was composed by accountants who think wine is something to be feared. It's a minerally white wine that is solid, dependable and food friendly, even with chain restaurant Italian food.
• Lockwood Sauvignon Blanc 2009 ($10, purchased): I have never understood why this wine isn't more readily available. It's well-priced, properly-made California white wine that inhabits a pleasant middle ground between New Zealand grapefruit and carelessly thought out plonk.
• Hayman & Hill Pinot Noir Reserve 2008 ($18, sample): A rare breed -- varietally correct pinot noir for less than $20, with dark berries, some earthiness and a clean, non-tannic finish.
• The Federalist Zinfandel 2007 ($25, sample): Much more interesting than I thought it was going to be, with lots of blueberry and black pepper on the nose and sweetish blueberry fruit in the glass. The alcohol is even reasonably low at 14.2 percent.
