How does $1,500 for a bottle of Salon Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil-sur-Oger 1995 sound?
It was on the wine list at Salum, a well-respected Dallas restaurant. Did the Wine Curmudgeon order it?
What do you think?
Our choice was a rose sparker, Langlois Cremant de Loire, at 1/40th the price. I have not tasted the Salon, though I have tasted several.vintage Delamottes, a similar wine. And I’m not sure the Salon would have been 40 times better. The Langolis was light, crisp, and fine value.
Why was the Salon so expensive? It’s pricey to begin with -- most bottles run $300 to $400 retail. Salon has an excellent reputation among Champagne types for quality and consistency, garnering big scores from the Wine Magazines. Plus, vintage wines are from Salon quite rare, further running the price up.
Though, having said all this, I’m still not sure why the restaurant marked the bottle up four times retail. Most of the rest of the of the intelligent and intriguing list is fairly priced My guess? it might be the only bottle in town.
